INTERNET SAFETY
As our world becomes one that spends a good chunk of the time surfing the net, how do you make sure it is safe for your child?
With the advanced technology becoming so easily accessible for our kids it brings new challenges to the parenting arena. Just as you need to monitor the music they listen to, the television they watch, the friends they spend time with, you also need to monitor their Internet use.
Some things to keep in mind are:
- Set family guidelines for computer use: where kids can go on the internet, how long can they spend time, what are the consequences for breaking the guidelines.
- Talk with your child about internet predators: how to protect personal information, what should they do if they feel uncomfortable, talk about posting photos on the web.
- Know where your child goes: check the blog site that your child spends the most time on, monitor the instant messaging and email, talk with other parents on which websites seem to be okay. Have a conversation and set guidelines about ethical and responsible behavior while online: have strict rules for spreading rumors or sending threats or hate email, talk about cyberbullies and how to handle them.
